A factor converts market or financial data into a numeric signal. You can analyze the signal before you decide whether to use it in a trading strategy.

Factor lifecycle

  1. Create a factor for one market in the Factor Library.
  2. Write the signal in formula mode or Python mode.
  3. Run a factor analysis with a date range, groups, direction, and market universe.
  4. Review group returns, IC statistics, and stability charts.
  5. Save meaningful code or parameter changes as a new version.
  6. Optimize parameters when you need a sensitivity check.
  7. Turn a validated factor into a strategy when you are ready to define trading rules.

Factor analysis evaluates the signal. It does not define order execution, position sizing, or risk controls. Configure and backtest those rules in Strategy after you validate the factor.
